Fact: Who are on average the tallest people in the world?
The Dutch. In the Netherlands building codes have been changed for
higher doorways.
Viking
Where
the name originated.
Actually it is Vikingr and Vikingar plural
"Vikingr" noun meaning Sea-raider.
"Viking" meaning Voyage/Piracy
The term Viking is derived from the Norse word
"Vik" meaning bay or coastal area.
Though Vik is a coastal area connected to the Oslo Fjord
it also is connected to the word bay or any bay.
So not only would they be from the Skagerrak
it would refer to sea robbers waiting in bays ready to attack.
Norway itself has about 150,000 of these Vik's.
The Vikings were not
that bad.
The
Vikings were not the only sea raiders.
The Frisians as well as the Picts and Welsh engaged in Piracy.
In the Baltic the Estonians, Finns, Wends and Slovacs were active
pirates also.
On land you had the Mongols and Magyars attacking the west.
The
Vikings
were not that bad. That's right.
Actually they were pussycats compared to the Tatars.
The Tatars are have said to eat human flesh.
They were said to be monsters rather than men and have been described
as terrible of body, furious of countenance, with wrathful eyes,
rapacious hands
and blood dripping teeth. Until they were wiped out by the Mongols.
The Vikings were only said to have drank from
human skulls.
They make a great cup in a pinch whats the big deal.
(A Saxon King drank from the skull of rival he killed and we
do too!)
Oh yeah and to have impaled babies on their swords.
OK now that's bad. We don't do that.
But the Vikings were very tolerant of all peoples especially the ladies,
and religions. Ultimately when they finally were force to accept
Christianity
their attitude was, We'll just add another God!
Viking
Conquests
The Vikings sack of Rome.
Well not
actually.
The Vikings besieged and captured "Luna" in Italy. which no longer
exists.
They were so impressed because they thought this walled city of about
5000 was Rome.
Oh well it's the thought that counts.
But the Viking exploits took them to every corner of Europe and beyond.
Combining the campaigns of all Scandinavian Vikings.
The list is impressive.
Britain and the British Isles, Ireland, Scotland, Orkney, Shetland, the
Hebrides, Isle of Man. France,
Frisia, the Baltics, Belgium, Germany. Sicily,
Italy.
as well as Spain
and Portugal where they fought the Moors and the Arabs.
The battles with the Arabs was pretty much a draw though. Much like
today even.
Through Russia to the Black and Caspian Sea to Istanbul and all the way
to Baghdad.
Rune
Facts
The Scandinavian
language is considered Northern Germanic.
Rune comes from the word "run" and runar" plural.
The ancestor of the modern
Scandinavian language was spoken for thousands of years, writing
did not
develop till the 2nd century. Most of the rune carvings were
on wood and have perished,
others on
metal and stone. The Oldest Rune carving found is from 200ce.
At first the
runes represented secrecy and mystery. Early in the birth of the runes
people
lacked the skills of writing and understanding them so they were
considered magical.
The runes
were used for religious purposes, invocation and protection.
The runes
birth place was Southern Denmark.
The runes
were inspired by the Latin and Greek alphabets but some with different
sounds.
Runes are
meant to be spelled as sounds not actual letters, or phonetically not
literally.
The runes spread to Sweden and
Norway and then with the tribes throughout the continent
during the
migration period.
During the
5th and 6th century the Danes stamped runes on just about anything.
Jewelry,
coins (they stamped over Roman coins)
you name it.
Then for a period during 600-800 ce it fell out of practice
in Denmark.
At least on
metal or stone, none from that time have been found.
Then it took
off in Sweden and Norway in stone carvings.
And in time
spreading back down to Denmark.
The elder
Furthark or Furthork had 24 runes.
By 800 ce it
was shorted to 16 runes easily learned and understood by all the
Scandinavians.
They had to add 3 more runes later for use with the runic calender.
The
Swedes
had a form of runic shorthand but the Danish type was the one
most used.
The runes
were carved into stone through the 11th century.
Used for
road signs, death and commemorative stones for new bridges etc.
The Vikings
took the runes to the British Isles where scores of them
remain
today. Runestone in Greece, Italy, Baltic Countries, Iceland
and all the way to Byzantine Empire with the Varangian Guard.
Most in memory of a Warrior that died on campaign.
Most of the runestones found here in the USA have been
proved to be well intentioned hoaxes. They were carved by
our kinsman from Scandinavia but tests show they were done in the 18 or
1900's.
Or brought over here from Europe.
There
are other forms of runes used during the middle ages and up to the
1800's in Europe.
